Objective The series of PELGAS cruises is designed to meet the need to evaluate the abundance of small pelagics in the Bay of Biscay, in order to ensure their sustainable exploitation by fisheries. Europe is cofinancing the PELGAS cruise to ensure that abundance indexes for anchovies and sardines are supplied to international working groups in charge of assessing these stocks. The second objective of the PELGAS cruises is to monitor the pelagic ecosystem in the Bay of Biscay in springtime. The aim of this monitoring is to supply the scientific elements required for ecosystem-based management of pelagic resources in the Bay, which are subjected both to naturation environmental variations, fisheries pressure and climate disruption due to human activities. The related project is the Ifremer programme for biological resources and environment (RBE), the fisheries cruises information system in the "SIH Ressources" project under the "tools and observation methods" action of the Ifremer ecology and models for fisheries science unit.
