Objective It is now generally accepted that about 25% of the ocean floor formed at slow-spreading ridges (Cannat et al., 1995; Escartin et al., 2008) and a good proportion of continental-ocean transitions (Lavier and Manatschal , 2006), are formed of rocks of deep origin, serpentinized peridotites and gabbros, emplaced in the footwall of exhumation faults. The tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes associated with this exhumation are therefore part of the fundamental processes of plate tectonics, and the specificities of composition and structure of the resulting lithospheres must be described. This is the main objective of the ROV-SMOOTH cruise, which also includes a section on the hydrous alteration of the exhumed rocks and on the resulting chemical exchanges with the ocean in relation to microbiological activity.
