Objective | The GITAN mission was performed in August 2015 aboard RV Pourquoi Pas?, and focused on studying 4 localized areas at the top of the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay (Armorican and Aquitaine margins). Detailed surveying of gravity instabilities on each of these zones made it possible to ultimately identify the so-called "target" landslide scars whose characteristics (bathymetry, height of scarp, surface, volume at play) shown to be representative at the scale of each of the areas studied. These "target" slump scars were studied in terms of their architecture (sub-bottom profiler, SYSIF), geotechnics/rheology (in-situ measurements using Penfeld penetrometer and laboratory tests) and sedimentology (long cores). The data acquired will enable us to 1) characterize and quantify the sedimentological, geotechnical and rheological properties of the sediments bordering the instability zones, 2) correlate the sedimentary stratification revealed by the coring and in-situ Penfeld profile with the seismic signal obtained in and around the areas of instabilities, and thus 3) quantify the processes predisposing underwater landslides and model the breaking surfaces, the volumes at play and the associated gravitational flows. This falls under the ANR PIA TANDEM project. |
