Objective Studying the sedimentary infilling of channels in the Bay of Brest and forming of sedimentary structures is part of a larger project to characterize sedimentary fluxes at different time scales from catchment basins to the Iroise Sea. The objective of this mission was to collect sedimentary cores aboard RV Thalia using Ifremer's Zenkovich and Küllenberg corers in the paleochannel of the inner and outer bay as well as on the main sedimentary bodies in the study sector. Cores taken in areas of significant sediment thicknesses, outside of the paleovalleys, will also make it possible to calibrate the seismic recording in the Bay of Brest and at its outflow and to conduct a paleo-environmental study. The acquisitions of this cruise should enable us to: 1) interpret the surface seismic analyses from the SERABEQ1 and 2 cruises, in terms of sedimentary facies; 2) trace the main stages of the history of the infilling and filling-up of the Bay of Brest during the last marine transgressions; 3) understand the processes by which sedimentary bodies are established and evolve; 4) obtain the sedimentary records required for the paleo-environmental study of the Bay of Brest. This involves studying foraminifera, pollens and diatoms to create a high resolution reconstruction of climate variations in the Holocene environment in the Bay of Brest. This falls under the Source to SINK project.
