Objective

The main objective of the PARTICULE project, funded by the PACA regional council, Labex OT-Med and MERMEX, is to quantify the atmospheric flux of anthropogenic particles and their fate in the water column of the Mediterranean Sea. PARTICULE focuses its research on the organic fraction of aerosols (phtalates, sugars, organic nutrients). Measuring these components in the atmosphere is currently underway. This cruise's principal objective is to conduct an initial estimation of the fate of these aerosols in the water column by measuring their concentration in sea water. In addition, water from the sea surface will be sampled during the cruise and brought back to the laboratory in order to launch process studies to help understand the dynamics of these aerosols' degradation in sea water. The MOOSE 11 cruise (ANTARES), initially planned on 7/04/2015, was carried out at the same time as the PARTICULE cruise, at the request of RV Tethys II's captain. The related project is MERMEX.
