Objective The standardized MEDITS (bottom trawling) scientific cruises aim to observe fishery resources, by always following the same sampling methods. They are always performed in the zone, in the same season, with standardized fishing gear, so that the data can be compared from one year to the next. They are used to describe commercial and non-commercial species in the Gulf of Lion and Eastern Corsica, and to observe any changes. The fish, molluscs and crustaceans are counted, measured and weighed. On some of them, biological samples (otoliths) are taken and their sex and state of sexual maturity are determined. Other information is recorded (temperature, salinity, macrofauna, macrowaste). The objective given priority is to produce abundance indexes for the main commercial species. Data on non-commercial species caught are also collected. They contribute to the knowledge needed to develop an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries, particularly in the framework of the Common Fisheries Policy and more broadly speaking, the European Union's marine strategy.
