Objective

The main goal of PACOTILLES is to appraise the evolutionary connectivity between fragmented marine habitats in the Lesser Antilles, particularly by estimating the specific and genetic diversity within each entity. We are focusing on three main populations representative of the benthic compartment: corals, sponges and algae, which have different functions within the ecosystem and act as indicators of the health of coralline environments. The study's specific objectives are to: 1) draw up a taxonomic inventory of species of coral, sponges and algae over all the islands for which knowledge remains extremely patchy or even non-existent; 2) analyze the cryptic diversity of species of coral, macroalgae and sponges through an integrative approach, especially in underwater caves; 3) create reference collections for corals, sponges and if need be for macroalgae in order to enrich national, international and IRD collections and to feed the collaborative database at www.ecimar.org; 4) study the genetic connectivity of various model species: for coral, Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, for sponges, Oscarella spp., Leucella floridana, Clathrina spp., Leucatis clathria and Ircinia campana, in particular); 5) contribute to identifying zones of endemism using different biogeographical analytical methods.
