Objective | The TECTA project's objective is to characterize a regional discordance related to a major tectonic event which affected the South West Pacific in the Eocene-Oligocene (which we call Tecta, for: Tectonic Event of the Cenozoic in the Tasman Area) and to test the hypothesis under which the initiation of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction would be responsible for this event. The scientific project of TECTA proposes to acquire multichannel reflection seismic data in the so called "supra-subduction" zone (upper plate comprising the Norfolk Ridge, Lord Howe Rise and the New Caledonia Trough) and to use stratigraphic analysis and borehole correlation to calibrate the chronology of temporal events characterizing TECTA. Concurrently, the VESPA project is focussing on the first signs of volcanic arc activity associated with the initiation of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone. The results which are expected from the two projects of the cruise will open up new perspectives for the understanding of the subduction zone initiation phenomenon and will make it possible to better define the entry parameters for new numerical models of subduction initiation. |
