Objectif	Les objectifs scientifiques spécifiques du projet GEOVIDE sont les suivants : 1. Mieux connaitre et quantifier la MOC et le cycle du carbone dans un contexte de variabilité décennale, en ajoutant de nouveaux traceurs clefs ; 2. Etablir la distribution des TEIs avec leur spéciation physique et chimique le long d'une section sur toute la colonne d'eau à haute résolution ; 3. Contexte scientifique et programmatique des campagnes

Le projet GEOVIDE est la contribution française au programme international GEOTRACES dans l'Atlantique Nord (Fig. 1).

Les éléments traces et isotopes (TEIs) jouent un rôle clef dans l'océan et peuvent être utilisés comme traceurs de processus océaniques passés et actuels. Etudier leur cycle biogéochimique, en lien avec la circulation océanique, a des implications directes sur de nombreuses recherches, telles que le cycle du carbone, les écosystèmes marins, la contamination environnementale et le climat.

Il est donc tout particulièrement important d'étudier leurs cycles en Atlantique Nord car c'est une région clef pour le climat de la planète et la circulation méridienne de retournement (MOC). Depuis 2002, le projet OVIDE a contribué à l'observation et la quantification de la circulation et des propriétés des masses d'eaux dans cette région (Mercier et al., 2015). Le lien très fort entre les programmes GEOVIDE et OVIDE définit la section GEOVIDE comme la section GEOTRACES possédant un des plus forts contextes d'océanographie physique.

L'Atlantique Nord est également une région où de très fortes floraisons phytoplanctoniques ont lieu (Henson et al., 2009) et dans laquelle il est important de mieux comprendre ce qui pilote la production et l'export de la matière organique et le rôle des TEIs dans ces processus. Par ailleurs, c'est une région ayant des apports variés en TEIs avec, par exemple, un fort gradient concernant les apports atmosphériques (Jickells et al., 2005) et des échanges potentiellement intenses au niveau des marges (Jeandel et al., 2011).

Enfin, c'est une zone clef pour étudier les traceurs paléo-océanographiques, afin de mieux comprendre leur comportement au départ du tapis roulant océanique.

Dans ce contexte, GEOVIDE est un projet collaboratif international, regroupant 21 laboratoires de 11 pays différents, qui vise à mieux contraindre (i) les incertitudes sur les flux d'eau et de chaleur, notamment en ajoutant des informations nouvelles sur l'export et la circulation des masses d'eaux profondes, et (ii) les flux et les processus biogéochimiques.

Résultats majeurs

En termes de circulation, la comparaison avec l'état moyen 2002-2012 montre un courant d'Irminger plus intense et un courant nord-atlantique plus faible (Zunino et al., 2017), ces anomalies étant toutefois compatibles avec la variabilité déjà observée le long de la section OVIDE dans les années 2000. Par ailleurs, les eaux de surface étaient beaucoup plus froides et plus fraîches que les moyennes de 2002 à 2012 (Zunino et al., 2017, Fig. 3).

De manière remarquable, malgré les anomalies négatives de température dans les eaux de surface, le transport de chaleur à travers la section OVIDE, estimé à 0,56 ± 0,06 PW, est le plus important mesuré depuis 2002. Cette valeur relativement élevée est reliée à une MOC relativement forte à travers la section OVIDE pendant la campagne GEOVIDE (18.7 ± 3.0 Sv) (Zunino et al., 2017).

L'évaluation de la contribution relative de chaque masse d'eau à la MOC (García-Ibáñez et al., 2017, Fig. 4) a permis de montrer que l'augmentation de l'intensité de la MOC de 2002-2010 à 2014 était liée à une augmentation du transport vers le nord des eaux centrales et vers le sud de la Subpolar Mode Water (SPMW) dans le bassin d'Irminger, et de l'Iceland-Scotland Outfow Water (ISOW) (García-Ibáñez et al., 2017).

En outre, la détermination précise des différentes masses d'eau (Garcia-Ibañez et al., 2017) et des processus de ventilation est cruciale pour l'interprétation de certains TEIs dont les distributions sont fortement liées aux masses d'eau. Nous pouvons citer par exemple, le plomb (Pb, Zurbrick et al., 2017), le mercure (Hg, Cossa et al., 2017), le fer (Fe, Tonnard et al, à soumettre, Fig. 2), l'aluminium (Al, Menzel Barraqueta et al., 2017), ou encore le radium (Ra, Le Roy et al., 2017). Ainsi, dans la Labrador Seawater (LSW), nous avons pu mettre en évidence la baisse des apports anthropogéniques au cours des dernières décennies. En effet, le Pb et l'Hg présentent tous les deux des concentrations plus faibles dans la LSW récemment formée entre le Groenland et la Nouvelle-Écosse que dans l'ancienne LSW du bassin d'Europe occidentale (Fig. 5 et 6).

Par ailleurs, une eau particulièrement enrichie en métaux tels que le Pb, le Hg ou l'Al est la Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW, Fig. 5, 6, et 7), ce qui reflète les importants apports en poussières sahariennes et anthropiques en zone méditerranéenne, bien plus élevés que dans notre zone d'étude (Shelley et al., 2017 a et b, Fig. 8).

En plus du lien avec les différentes masses d'eaux, des apports externes ont pu être mis en évidence, en particulier au niveau (i) des couches benthiques néphéloïdes, dans les bassins d'Islande, d'Irminger et du Labrador, ainsi que (ii) des marges ibérique, groenlandaise et canadienne. C'est le cas notamment pour certains métaux traces dissous, comme le fer (Tonnard et al., 2018, Fig. 9), le manganèse (Planquette et al., à soumettre), certains métaux traces particulaires (Gourain et al., à soumettre, Fig. 10), ou encore certains radionuclides (radium, Le Roy et al., 2017, Fig. 11). Outre les apports sédimentaires, d'autres sources ont pu être démontrées, en particulier fluviales ou météoriques (Tonnard et al., 2018, Benetti et al., 2017).

Ces sources externes permettent d'apporter suffisamment de Fe dans certaines régions (par ex. au niveau des marges) pour éviter une limitation du phytoplancton. En revanche, d'autres régions, comme le bassin d'Islande ou les mers d'Irminger ou du Labrador, sont potentiellement limitées en Fe (Tonnard et al., 2018). Dans les régions subpolaires et subtropicales, les flux de reminéralisation mésopélagiques atteignent et dépassent même parfois les flux d'export de carbone en surface, soulignant l'impact important de la reminéralisation mésopélagique sur la pompe biologique de carbone avec une efficacité de séquestration du carbone au-delà de 1000 m proche de zéro au printemps 2014 (Lemaître et al., 2017, Fig. 11).
