Objective | The FEBBE-2 complemented that of FEBBE-1. The FEBBE-2 cruise aimed to collect data on the structure and functioning of benthic communities in the Bay of Biscay in the "Grande Vasière" zone which are under strong pressure from professional trawl fisheries. The area is a significant habitat in the Bay of Biscay because of its specificity in terms of biodiversity (burrowing macro-megafauna community), as a nursery for species of interest to fisheries (e.g. hake) and use by fisheries (e.g. Nephrops prawns). The FEBBE-2 cruise is part of the European BENTHIS project whose main objective is to assess the impacts of bottom trawling on various European marine ecosystems and to develop and/or test alternatives to the most harmful practices. |
