Objective The Bay of Biscay and the Celtic Sea are a major fishing sector for French fleets. The economics stakes for this vast area fully justify a major effort in terms of managing the resource and making arrangements for these fisheries, which will require in depth knowledge of the biology and dynamics of the fished stocks. Therefore, it is essential to have reliable time series for the parameters needed to assess the resources and trends of marine ecosystems. The EVHOE cruises act as an observatory for resources in the Bay of Biscay and the Celtic Sea. Populations are inventoried annually, following a standardized protocol. The EVHOE cruises are related to the programme on an Ecosystem approach to fisheries. Their main objectives are to construct time series of abundance indexes which can be used in stock assessment and in particular, measuring the annual recruitment of populations, and study the strategies species use in occupying the area during their life cycle. Moreover, EVHOE is a source of information about how demersal and benthic resources are evolving for Ifremer's scientific challenge called: "Understanding the interaction between fisheries resources, the environment and pressure from human activities on the regional scale, analyzing, understanding and predicting how the system will evolve according to various climate and economic scenarios".
