Objective	Assessing anchovy and sardine biomasses in the Bay of Biscay using acoustics and associated pelagic trawl hauls. Monitoring the pelagic ecosystem in the Bay of Biscay in springtime: hydrobiological context, primary production, zooplankton, small pelagic fish, cetaceans and birds. Characterizing the spawning habitat of anchovies and sardines in the Gironde estuary using a multi-sensor approach. The related projects are SIH Campagnes, POPEX and EMH.

Summary of measurements

-Acoustic prospection (6-frequency single beam echosounders and multibeam fisheries echosounder) to study the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay, primarily anchovies and sardines.
-Pelagic trawl catches to identify acoustic target and acquire biological parameters (size distributions, demographics, biological characteristics).
-Egg counts at surface by pumping with the CUFES system to determining spawning zones and assess adult biomass.
-Catching plankton and micronekton to characterize the biotic environment of small pelagic fish populations.
-CTD stations and continuous shipboard TSG-fluorimetry in order to describe the abiotic environment and primary production.
-Identification and visual counts of cetaceans and birds present in the area to describe higher predators in the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay.
-Density column used to study vertical migration of eggs in the water column.
-Sea trials for TALIM: optical system for surveying and automatic counts of eggs and meso-zooplankton in collaboration with Dyneco and RDT Brest.
Characterizing the spawning habitat of anchovies and sardines in the mouth of the Gironde using a multi-sensor approach (pelagic profiler, flowcam, acoustic profiler, etc.).
-Coordinating 2 professional fishing vessels during the first 18 days of the cruise which took additional fishing catches along the same route as RV Thalassa.
