Objective BioBaz, for integrated biology of Bathymodiolus azoricus, is a sampling and experimentation cruise focusing on vent mussels, a model organism for chemotrophic symbiosis in extreme environments. This species which is specific to hydrothermal vents on the North Atlantic ridge, holds both thiotrophic and methanotrophic endosymbiont bacteria in varying proportions, depending on the environmental conditions at the sites where it occurs. Therefore, the BioBaz cruise will explore the mussel beds on the Menez Gwen (-850m), Lucky Strike (-1700m) and Rainbow (-2400m) sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the south-west of the Azores to perform physical-chemical characterization of the micro-environment in parallel with analyzing the biological parameters of the vent mussels and their symbiotic bacteria. A number of projects also focus on the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, which lives in ectosymbiosis with other bacteria. The novel aspect of the cruise mainly lies in the joint deployment of tools for isobaric collection and hyperbaric experimentation and those for molecular analysis (DNA chips, genomics, proteomics) allowing experimental approaches and general analyses to be combined. These analyses should lead to better understanding of the symbiotic relationship between animals and bacteria which affects the nutrition, immunity and ecotoxicology of these species. The BioBaz scientific programme includes additional objectives involving community ecology. Finally, specific diving time will be devoted to a documentary film which will be produced on the theme of Symbiosis in the abyssal plains.
