Objective | The PRISME 2 cruise objective was to study in detail the traces of large underwater landslides affecting the continental slope in three different sectors of the western Mediterranean (Ligurian margin, Pianosa ridge, gulf of Lion), to better understand the landslide deposits' nature, geometry and age, the mechanical properties of sediments in the area where collapses began (landslide scars) and finally, the possible factors which may control slides and their occurrence or recurrence times. By linking the results from the PRISME 2 cruise with those from PRISME 3, initially planned as the second part of the same cruise, these objectives will be reached. The 3 zones' boundaries are formed by the following polygons: ABCDE (Ligurian): A (43°30'N ' 7°30'E) B (43°15'N ' 7°45'E) C (43°30'N ' 8°45'E) D (44°15'N ' 9°15'E) E (44°17'N ' 8°52'E); FGHIJK (Pianosa): F (42°15'N - 9°35'E) G (42°15'N - 10°15'E) H (42°30'N - 10°15'E) I (42°30'N ' 10°00E) J (42°58'N ' 10°00E) K (42°58'N - 9°35'E); LMNO (Gulf of Lion): L (41°40'N ' 4°45'E) M (41°40'N ' 5°45'E) N (42°30'N ' 5°45'E) O (42°30'N ' 4°45'E). The related project is called PAPRICA (PAmela PRIsme2 Contourite Appraisal), in the framework of the PAMELA (PAssive Margins Exploration LAboratories) scientific cooperation agreement between TOTAL and Ifremer. |
