Objective

As of today, it is still not known with certainty which faults came into play during the Al Hoceima quakes, nor which other faults could accommodate (and/or have accommodated) large-scale earthquakes. The Marlboro2 ocean research cruise proposed to take imagery of active faults in the Al Hoceima region and of associated sedimentary systems, through combined use of multibeam bathymetry and high resolution seismic reflection. One of the main objectives is to find traces of recent deformations in order to identify the tectonic structures which are potentially active and thus likely to generate destructive earthquakes. The faults, fold growth, channels, slumping and canyons will supply first-rate tectonic and sedimentary markers to specify the tectonic activity in the zone. This study will make it possible to outline the zones where the most marked uplift and faulting are seen at present in order to try to assess the seismic hazards and determine where the next slides could be begin. The MARLBORO2 cruise is related to the French Actions Marges (Améditer) programme as well as to Spanish programmes Contouriber and SAGAS and the international programme called Topomed. It follows on from the Marlboro1 cruise in July 2011.
