Objective | This cruise took place during the general MD 189 / INDIEN SUD 2 survey. The S.O. OISO (Indian Ocean observation service) aims to study the variability over time and space of air-sea exchanges of CO2 and the invasion of anthropogenic CO2 in the ocean in subtropical, sub-Antarctic and Southern Ocean zones. The OISO observations acquired aboard RV Marion-Dufresne (IPEV) since 1998 complement the measurements taken in other ocean sectors by French (MINERVE aboard RV L'Astrolabe) and foreign (http://www.ioccp.org/Underway/New_GlobalUWMap.html) partners. These observations are crucial for assessing carbon budgets on a global scale (Kyoto protocol framework) and to parametrize and then validate predictive climate models (IPCC framework). The OISO-21 cruise aimed to reoccupy the transects between Reunion, Crozet, Kerguelen and Amsterdam Islands and revisit the 17 OISO stations set along this track. The joint coring operations conducted for MD 189 / INDIEN SUD 2 (head scientist: A. Mazaud, LSCE), and hydroacoustic operations for VT 119 / OHA-SIS-BIO-4 (headed by J-Y Royer, IUEM) also made it possible to acquire surface water observations west of Kerguelen, particularly along the East-West transect which had been sampled 2 months earlier during the MD 188 / KEOPS 2 and VT 117 / OISO-20 cruise and to explore a new zone to the north of Amsterdam. The related projects are: the international WCRP/CLIVAR, IGBP/SOLAS, IGBP/IMBER and FP7-CARBOCHANGE and national (LEFE/CyBER) programmes. |
