Objective | This cruise took place during the general MD 189 / SOUTH INDIAN 2 survey. Redeploying a hydroacoustic observatory to monitor the seismicity associated with ocean expansion along the three ridges in the Indian Ocean and the deformation of the central Indian basin, as well as the presence and migration of large whales in the Southern Indian Ocean. The observatory is made up of 9 autonomous hydrophones located on 5 sites; 2 antennas of 3 hydrophones 30km apart were installed on 2 of the sites (N-CRO and W-KER). The array was deployed in 2009-2010 during the VT 109 / OHA-SIS-BIO-1 and MD 174 / TRACK-2 missions (Dec.-Jan. 2010) and VT 112 / OHA-SIS-BIO-2 and MD 175 / GEISEIR-2 (Feb. 2010), then partly redeployed in Jan.-Feb. 2011 (VT 115 / OHA-SIS-BIO-3 and MD 185 / INDIEN SUD 1). During VT119-MD189, 8 of the 9 hydrophones were retrieved, 1 was not found (WKER2) and 7 were redeployed (1 per site + the WKER triplet; see attached map). The related project is OHA-SIS-BIO (hydroacoustic observatory of seismicity and biodiversity). |
