Objective The SPRAYALIS 3 cruise's aim is to contribute to in situ observation efforts in 2013 of the East Caledonian Current, a major current in regional oceanic circulation around New Caledonia, by deploying a sub-surface current-meter mooring to the north-east of Lifou (167°15'E, 20°26'S). This mooring follows that of a similar mooring deployed in the same place from November 2010 to October 2011 (SPRAYALIS and SPRAYALIS 2 cruises), and will be an integral part of an observation system which will enable the validation of coastal altimetry data from the AltiKa satellite in the year following its launch into orbit (scheduled for December 2012). Thus, in 2013 this observation system will include this mooring as well as a hydrology (CTD) and current meter (S-ADCP and L-ADCP) leg between New Caledonia and the Vanuatu islands (LOSS cruise planned for the second semester of 2013) and repeated hydrology legs in 2013 and 2014 using a glider, under track #745 of the AltiKa satellite.
