Objective The general objective of the PEPSEA cruise is to characterize the contamination by residues of medicines in the coastal area located near the Cortiou discharge outlet. The sewage treatment plant for the city and urban area of Marseilles treats approximately 1,865,000 EqH, making it the main outflow of treated waste waters discharge directly into the sea on the French Mediterranean coast. To meet this objective, various tasks were carried out during the PEPSEA cruise: On shore: - Assessing the raw fluxes input to the marine environment via this outlet, based on monitoring of concentrations at the treatment plant's outflow and of the water volumes passing. At sea: - Mapping the zone of the freshening plume's footprint near the outflow depending on the weather conditions encountered. - Characterizing the contamination of the site by residues of drugs and medicines (antibiotics, psychotropic drugs, analgesics, B-blockers) in the water, sediments and mussels, both in the near field and the medium range of the discharge. The related project is PEPSEA.
