Objective	UPSEN was an ocean cruise in the waters of Senegal whose core objective is to describe the physical structure of the coastal upwelling (location and intensity) and how it evolves over time and space in a limited zone in the Petite Côte region of Senegal. The basic principle was to estimate vertical ocean velocities using the divergence of horizontal currents.

Summary of measurements

-Measuring horizontal currents (for periods varying from 4 to 16h), 14 times; using a mooring with 4 current-meters set in a 1x1 nautical mile square.
-Measurements were often coupled with a current measurement using a current-meter (towfish) towed at the surface.
-156 hydrological profiles as well as continuous measurements via shipboard sensors for salinity, temperature, current and meteorological conditions.
-7 SVP drifting surface floats and 4 ARVOR profiling floats were deployed.
-Spot measurement of bathymetry lasting two hours.
-Water samples were taken to measure dissolved oxygen (98 samples - 11 stations), salinity (92 samples - 10 stations), chlorophyll pigments (279 samples - 50 stations), nutrient concentrations (521 samples - 70 stations).
-Atmosphere and seawater emissivity was measured.
