Objective | The POLYPLAC cruise is part of the EXTRAPLAC project, whose purpose is to submit and defend the application to extend the French legal continental shelf to the United National Convention for the Law of the Sea. This cruise is connected with the application file to extend the continental shelf beyond the Polynesian EEZ, and more specifically, in a zone located to the east of the Marquesas Islands for the project's first operation in this region. In compliance with the extension application directives, the main priorities of the POLYPLAC cruise are (1) to characterize the natural extension from the Marquesas Island land mass to the edge of the continental margin and (2) to supply elements to characterize the "foot of the slope" which is the boundary beyond which an extension of 60 nautical miles can be proposed. Within this context, the POLYPLAC cruise is mainly based on acquiring multibeam acoustic data to map the area, associated with magnetism and sub-bottom profiler data, complemented by rock dredge samples. |
