Objective | The BIONOD cruise is the outcome of Ifremer-BGR cooperation. It fulfils the obligations of these two institutes in maintaining mining permits in areas with polymetallic nodules in the North-East Pacific. The BIONOD cruise followed on from Ifremer's NODINAUT cruise conducted in the same geographical area in 2004. The latter had made it possible for the first time to show that nodule fields were a specific habitat for numerous species and that they contribute to promoting the biological diversity of abyssal seafloors. The aim of BIONOD is to refine knowledge about the geographical distribution of species associated with fields of nodules and determine the environmental factors which may influence this distribution. Monitoring the zones studied during the NODINAUT cruise over time will also make it possible to assess the dynamism of ecosystems formed by nodule fields. The related project is called Biodiversity and functioning of deep ecosystems, impacts. |
