Objective | Using large CALYPSO-type core samples, the main objective for all sites was to carry out paleoclimatological and paleoceanographical studies on time scales of the last 15,000 years in the Marmara Sea and the last 2, 3, or 4 climate cycles in the other inventoried areas. Additional aspects were addressed, such as the current tectonics and studies on paleosismicity in the Marmara Sea, studies of gravity flow of climatic and/or tectonic origin (Gulf of Lion, Corsica); genesis, age and potential role of carbonate mounts in the search for offshore oil (deep-water coral banks in the Porcupine Basin). The related projects are MARMACORE and the European projects POP and GEOMOUND. |
