Objective | Core sampling in the Southern Indian Ocean to study the variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) over several climate cycles. Measurements of helium-3 originating in the mantle. The general objective of the INDIENSUD-ACC coring programme is to obtain high resolution recordings of past climate and ocean trends over a large sector of the Southern Indian Ocean crossed by this current. This means reproducing, thanks to environmental magnetism methods to determine the size and abundance of eroded magnetic grains transported by the ACC, the variations in the strength and latitude of this current over the last few climate cycles, focusing on the last 20,000 years and key periods like glacial-interglacial transitions. To assess the associated climate variations, we will also reconstruct the temperature and salinity variations in the ocean in this area, based analyses of microfauna (abundance of different species) and analyses of oxygen and carbon isotopes in foraminifera shells. Large square coring (CASQ) is used to obtain complete and undeformed sedimentary series for the most recent periods such as the Holocene and the last climate cycle. Calypso cores can cover several climate cycles and thus be used to determine the longer-term evolution of the ACC and climate conditions in the sector. Links with variations in other regions of the earth, in Antarctica (EPICA drilling) and the North Atlantic, were studied. Samples to measure helium-3 from the mantle which is present in interstitial water of sediments, involved 2 Calypso cores. Our objectives were to obtain one CASQ core and one Calypso core on each of the 10 zones defined. On the 5 stations performed, 6 cores were made. Samples were taken with plankton net at 8 OISO stations. |
