Objective The main goal of the cruise was to characterize 8 of the islets in the South lagoon of New Caledonia, several of which are UNESCO world heritage sites. In spite of being visited or used and the number of studies made on the New Caledonian South lagoon, these islets have been neglected until now. The mission aimed to collect information required for high resolution mapping of subsea habitats located on flats. Along with habitat, biodiversity was investigated in terms of marine invertebrate communities (of commercial or non-commercial species) present on these flats. Finally, topography profiles and sediment samples from beaches will be used to characterize the sedimentary regime of the islets. The goal will then be to establish differences between islets and see if a typology can be defined and then compare it to criteria of vulnerability, particularly with respect to climate change and hazards.
