Objective	The CGFS cruise objectives are to collect basic data to support estimations of the recruitment and state of health of the main stocks fished in the Eastern English Channel. In the context of the ecosystem approach, CGFS contributes to improving knowledge about spatial distribution and assemblages, as well as characterizing the habitats preferentially used by the main species in the Eastern Channel. The related project is Ecosystem-based approach to fisheries.

Summary of measurements

-110 trawl hauls of 30 minutes using a GOV bottom trawl with large vertical opening, 103 of which were validated. Sorting and weighing of all species caught. Measurements of commercial species and cephalopods caught.
-Benthic communities were monitored.
-Otolith samples taken on whiting, cod, plaice and goatfish and scale samples taken on sea bass.
-Surface salinity and temperature recorded by Micrel probe attached to lead line while shooting and turning; continuous recording (periods of 15") on the bottom during fishing operations.
-Samples of live plaice and cuttlefish and cuttlefish flesh taken for the University of Caen.
-Live fish and invertebrates captured for Nausicaa, the national sea experience centre in Boulogne/mer.
-Individuals were sampled to identify the trophic level.
-Biometric data and flesh samples from selachians.
