Objective

The Guineco-MeBo cruise proposed a multidisciplinary (geology, geochemistry and geotechnics) study of a zone of pockmarks located offshore from the Niger delta. The very high resolution imaging and bathymetry, as well as 3D seismic data acquired recently by industry in the area, revealed the presence of pockmarks at various stages of formation. These pockmarks are characterized by the presence of gas hydrate-rich sediments. The cruise's main objective was to understand the mechanisms of pockmark formation evolution, based on a series of comparative observations made at different stages of their development. The cruise is related to Ifremer's Geological hazards project.
