Objectif

L'objectif de la campagne WACS (West Africa Cold Seeps) était d'étudier le fonctionnement et la diversité des écosystèmes associés aux sources de fluides froids dans le Golfe de Guinée à partir de l'étude multidisciplinaire  de quelques structures actives sur les marges du Congo, de l'Angola et du Gabon. La campagne était basée sur une stratégie multi-échelles. A l'échelle locale il s'agissait d'analyser les relations entre les associations biologiques et l'hétérogénéité de l'habitat, en intégrant l'étude des adaptations faunistiques à un habitat contraignant, une estimation quantitative des flux de méthane, et de poursuivre une démarche temporelle en collaboration avec nos partenaires allemands. A l'échelle régionale (Golfe de Guinée) les communautés colonisent différentes structures géologiques actives (pockmarks, diapirs). Nous avions pour objectif de rechercher les relations entre structures géologiques et communautés, et les échanges génétiques entre les zones étudiées.

La seconde partie de la campagne était dédiée à l'exploration de deux zones profondes en bas de pente et dans les lobes terminaux du chenal du Congo, afin de déterminer si les communautés à base chimiosynthétique repérées dans ces zones sont liées au recyclage superficiel de matière organique d'origine terrestre ou à des remontées de méthane depuis des réservoirs profonds. La faune de ces environnements réducteurs sera comparée à celle des structures géologiques actives et les flux géniques éventuels entre les zones seront estimés.

À l'échelle océanique (radiale équatoriale atlantique - AEB en collab. Avec nos partenaires américains), nous avions pour objectif les parentés entre espèces homologues des sources hydrothermales et « cold-seeps », pour en inférer les voies de dispersion et les barrières biogéographiques, les cas de co-évolution dans les associations pérennes.

Le projet de rattachement est le Projet Ifremer "Biodiversité et fonctionnement des écosystèmes profonds, impacts".
