Objective

The WACS (West Africa Cold Seeps) cruise aimed to study the functioning and diversity of ecosystems associated with cold fluid seeps in the Gulf of Guinea, on the Congo and Gabon margins. The main objectives were to: Estimate the biodiversity of the different microbiological and faunal compartments on a cold seep site exhibiting extensive spatial heterogeneity; Highlight the ways fauna have adapted to a l adaptations to a restrictive habitat; Identify the environmental factors influencing population structure; Understand the regional variability of fauna's response to fluid expulsion in various geological contexts; Contribute to studying the biogeography and phylogeography of species in deep sea reducing environments in the Atlantic; Explore the deep lobe area of the deep Congo fan and begin a study on ecosystem functioning, as a preliminary to the Congolobe project. Ifremer's "Biodiversity and functioning of deep sea ecosystems, impacts" is the related project.
