Objective | The FAIVI (Features of Acores and Italian Volcanic Islands) project is based on a two-fold scientific objective in the central Azores (mainly Terceira island): 1/ study of the special and extremely rare eruptive products (lava balloons) created during submarine volcanic eruptions at intermediate depths, by comparing two zones (out of the 3 or 4 known worldwide) where this type of product was emitted during both historic (1891 at Pantelleria, Italy) and recent (1998-2001 at Terceira, Azores) periods; 2/ analysis of small-scale wedge-shaped sedimentary accretion bodies found in shallow water (generally from -150 m) in some sectors of the coast around Italy as well as, according to the literature, in other geologically active regions (i.e. volcanism or margins on fault zones). For IOZOC project themes: the submerged slopes of oceanic islands hold diverse coral and benthic fauna communities. The project mainly aims to understand what governs the distribution of animals on the seafloor, how they reproduce, develop and disperse. The Faial-Pico channel is the area of interest, to acquire information through video surveying on in situ settlement studies and population genetics studies on selected benthic community elements and estimate their resilience (at both community and population levels) to physical environmental disturbance. In the framework of this cruise, the aim was to sample and analyze 8 study sites and 4 stations in the Faial-Pico channel. The cruise is part of the EUROFLEETS project. |
