Objective What environmental conditions are necessary for optimal growth of Trichodesmium and other diazotrophic cyanobacteria? In particular, the goal was to determine the origin of iron and phosphorus and their respective roles in the growth of Trichodesmium. What are the biogeochemical consequences of the development of these organisms on the environment? Which phytoplankton communities develop, what kinds of food webs are built, what kinds of nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus fluxes are established before, during and after Trichodesmium blooms? This first cruise was rather exploratory in nature. The main goal was to determine if the strategy adopted was the right one, if the set points had been well chosen and if the sampling tools were appropriate. The related programs are IRD: UR CYANO: DIAPAZON program, INSU: national PROOF program.
