Objective | Previous studies have shown significant contamination by certain metals such as chrome, cobalt, nickel and manganese in sediments from the area near (15 km of coast) the abandoned asbestos mine to the west of Cap Corse (northwestern Corsica) and an accumulation of these contaminants in mussels analyzed from traps in several stations in this area (COCON [in 1999] and RINBIO2000 cruises). The CANARI cruise continued the study of the impact of previous discharges from the mine on the biological, physical and chemical compartments of the surrounding marine environment. The cruise aimed at assessing the transfer of metal contaminants from the sediment to organisms by estimating the amount and the spread of the contamination in the water column and in the organisms in the area around the mine. It also aimed to explore the possibility of an impact near the adjacent canyon head (Saint Florent Canyon). This project fell under the LIMA project. |
