Objective	Establishing time series of abundance indices for the main demersal and benthic species in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Measuring inter-annual changes in their recruitment. Mapping spatial distributions of the species and their inter-annual variations, as well as looking for the origin of this variability (biotic and/or abiotic parameters, fisheries impact). In the framework of the "Bay of Biscay" challenge, the data collected were vital for understanding changes in faunal communities. The cruise covered the following geographic zones: Bay of Biscay, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and south of St George's channel of isobaths from -15 m to - -600 m.

Summary of measurements

-165 standardized 30-minute daytime bottom trawlings (of 151 were valid)
with the GOV 36/47 trawl, in 27 geographic-bathymetric strata on seabeds 15 to 600m deep.
-5 night-time pelagic trawlings over deep seabeds in the Bay of Biscay, at depths of 1,500, 1,000, 500 and 200 m, to collect unknown or poorly known meso- and bathypelagic species.
-155 vertical temperature and salinity profiles taken using the Seabird 19 CTD (DVR/RH/ECOHAL/Nantes).
- With each trawl haul: determination, weighing and measuring of each species caught; sex determination for the main commercial species, hard tissue (otholiths, illicia) samples taken, and new biological parameters recorded for various species.
- With each trawl haul: sex determination for the main commercial species, hard tissue samples taken, and new biological parameters recorded for various species.
-1140 branchial lamellae samples taken for genetic studies of anglerfish, hake, whiting, pollack, octopus; added to collections (IUEM/Brest)
-1,200 hake stomach samples collected for updating data on the diet of this species in the prospected zone (UPRES-A ELICO 8013 CNRS, Université Côte d'Opale)
-Recording and exploitation of the geometric parameters of the trawl in use to validate fishing operations (DRV/RH/Lorient and TMSI/TP/Lorient).
-Studies of ice storage of various species of fatty fish (DRV/VP/GA/Nantes).
-Collection of fish from the Gadidae family for osteological studies (CNRS UMR 5534, Université Lyon 1).
