Objective The aim of this cruise was to carry out a detailed bathymetric survey of some chosen detrital structures along the eastern Corsica margin. Complementary core samples were also taken for a detailed and thorough sedimentology study of the most recent structures. The study involved determining the lithology and the detailed geometry of submarine fans; defining in detail the facies distribution in order to determine the mechanisms of the sedimentary process; accurately determining the Quaternary stratigraphy in order to study the temporal evolution of the detrital structures as well as the processes behind their edification; exploring the factors and the parameters that influence the morphology and the facies of submarine fans; constructing a model of the distribution of "sand bodies" within these types of submarine fans. Only one-sixth of the cruise took place in Italian waters (to the north of the study zone). The related project concerned the Contribution to offshore oil-drilling.
