Objective | The general focus of the ERODER cruise, acronym for "EROsion et Démantèlement de l'Edifice volcanique de la Réunion", is to study volcanic edifice dismantling processes, the roles respectively played by flank destabilizations and erosion, as well as the transport dynamics of matter on the flanks of the volcanic edifice reaching to the abyssal plain. It is part of a Land-Sea approach. ERODER 3 is the third of the ERODER project's four cruises. The ERODER 3 cruise objectives fall under the ongoing ERODER programme. It involves, thanks to deployment of the TOBI sidescan sonar towed near the bottom, acquiring high resolution sonar images in order to improve our knowledge about the origins of large landslides of debris and turbidity currents, and the related physical processes (rapid erosion, transport and depositional processes). The surveys were chosen in order to obtain a clear image of the structures resulting from the various processes, which were the structures identified on surveys of the previous cruises. During these surveys, magnetometer and gravimeter data were acquired, along with sediment sounder data. This falls under the ERODER project. |
