Objectif

Le "Grand Sud" de Madagascar est une enclave marine tempérée remarquable au sein d'une province tropicale. Depuis le début des années 1990, les collectionneurs de coquillages ont découvert dans cette région plusieurs dizaines d'espèces nouvelles, essentiellement collectées en laisses de mer à la côte ou en sous-produit de l'activité villageoise de pêche à la langouste sur les petits fonds de 5 à 30 mètres. Ces découvertes attestent de l'originalité de la région et de son très faible niveau d'exploration. Le contexte hydroclimatique particulier laisse supposer l'existence d'une zone de fort endémisme.

Ces découvertes se sont concentrées sur les côtes des régions Anosy et Androy de Madagascar, ce que les malgaches appellent le "Grand Sud", ou Atimo Vatae, d'où le nom de la campagne. La campagne de l'Antea faisait partie intégrante d'une expédition incluant trois autres volets: (i) un leg à terre basé à Fort Dauphin, succédé (ii) d'un leg à terre à Lavanono, avec un succédané de laboratoire maritime et des moyens de récolte en plongée opérant dans un rayon d'une à deux heures de la base ; (iii) un leg embarqué à bord du crevettier « Nosy Be 11 » dont l'objectif était d'explorer par chalutage le plateau continental en dessous des profondeurs plongeables. L'Antéa a donc été utilisé pour des prélèvements en plongée dans les secteurs les plus éloignés des bases à terre de Fort Dauphin et Lavanono.

Les résultats attendus étaient un inventaire de la biodiversité remarquable entre 0 et 30 mètres de profondeur, la découverte d'espèces nouvelles, la caractérisation par « barcoding » de la majorité des échantillons prélevés, et la description des principales communautés benthiques et des grandes unités biogéographiques. Un partenariat local spécifique avec une grande ONG devait permettre la création d'outils de transfert de connaissances pour une meilleure conservation de la biodiversité de cette écorégion.
