Objective The MESOP 2010 cruise is part of a series of operations carried out the Mozambique Channel whose objective is to understand the effect of mesoscale eddies on the different trophic levels (MESOBIO programme). The MESOP 2010 cruise had two legs with separate objectives. Leg 1 (covered in this report) looked at the trophic relationships between the different levels of the food chain. To this end, measurements are taken within the eddy structures to characterize the environment (hydrology, current measurements, nutrients, chlorophyll and pigments), the first trophic levels (phytoplankton and zooplankton) and the intermediate levels (micronekton). In addition, a longliner vessel was chartered (SWIOFP programme) to catch higher-order predators (tuna and related species). The two vessels worked in parallel during the first part of the mission. The location of the eddy structures was determined using satellite data (mainly sea colour and altimetry) and in real-time on site, using current measurements (S-ADCP and L-ADCP). This work is done in partnership with South African teams. The second part of the cruise (Leg 2) will be more specifically devoted to primary and secondary production processes. This falls under the MESOBIO project (WIOMSA funded).
