Objective | The aim of POMME (multidisciplinary mesoscale ocean program) was to understand the impact of mesoscale (on the order of 20 to 50 km) features on the formation and the subduction of weakly stratified winter masses (mode waters), on spring blooms and on the fate of biogenic matter exported into the upper thermocline. The region studied was in the North East Atlantic, between 38 and 45°N. centered around 18°W in the winter mixed layer depth discontinuity zone where both subduction and thermocline ventilation occur. This integrative program incorporated a strong component of in situ and satellite-based measurements, systematic use of real-time data assimilation tools and significant development of in numerical modeling coupling ocean dynamics with biological activity, in close association with empirical data. |
