Objectif

Des massifs de coraux profonds sont largement répandus le long des marges de l'océan Atlantique et peuvent être aussi riches et diversifiés que leurs homologues tropicaux. Les objectifs pluridisciplinaires étaient d'explorer entre 380 à 1000m afin d'explorer différents "géotypes" de monts qui avaient été sélectionnés grâce à des données géophysiques et sédimentologiques acquises au cours des programmes précédents. Un second objectif était de tester l'hypothèse d'un lien entre le développement des monts et les émissions de méthane, par des prélèvements d'eau in situ dans l'environnement proche des coraux.

Le programme, basé sur l'étude détaillée par ROV de six différents monts carbonatés et récifs de coraux profonds distribués autour de la Baie profonde de Porcupine et du banc de Rockall, devait permettre de :

  • décrire l'extension des récifs de coraux sur chaque mont, identifier les espèces fondatrices,
  • décrire la composition et la structure spatiale des communautés de mégafaune associée,
  • comprendre l'environnement sédimentaire et le mode de développement géologique de la province des monts sous-marins,
  • rechercher les possibles relations entre la formation des monts et des suintements d'hydrocarbures,
  • obtenir les premières informations sur la composition de la faune de petite taille et sur la microfaune associées aux récifs,
  • analyser le degré et la nature des impacts humains sur les écosystèmes coralliens irlandais,
  • réaliser les premiers essais en mer d'une cartographie à grande précision en micro-bathymétrie (futur module de mesure en route du Victor) et réalisation de mosaïques vidéo en temps réel.
