Objectif

ATOS (26 jours, Victor / L'Atalante) est la campagne unique du projet de la commission européenne VENTOX (EVK3-CT1999-00003) coordonne par D. Dixon (SOC, UK) et rassemblant dix laboratoires anglais, portugais et français. Ce programme interdisciplinaire a pour objectif l'étude des adaptations et processus spécialisés développés par les organismes hydrothermaux et leurs communautés microbiennes associées en réponse à un environnement potentiellement "toxique".

Ce projet repose sur la comparaison de trois champs hydrothermaux de la ride medio-atlantique, différents par leurs profondeurs, leurs caractéristiques géologiques, géochimiques et biologiques. La description physico-chimique de l'écosystème (analyseur in situ, ALCHIMIST, et prélèvements discrets) à l'échelle de la micro-distribution des organismes (imagerie), permettra de définir les taux d'exposition des organismes à différents composes "toxiques" (sulfure, métaux lourds, CO2...). Ces données serviront de base à des approches expérimentales aux échelles de la molécule, de la cellule et de l'organisme sur les invertébrés et les poissons qui dominent les communautés. Les expérimentations en conditions in situ simulées et contrôlées (enceinte pressurisée IPOCAMP) permettront de préciser les seuils de tolérance des organismes hydrothermaux à leur milieu, de déterminer les taux d'altération et de réparation de l'ADN, d'identifier les processus de détoxication. Le mouillage pendant la campagne de "cages à faune" autonomes, récupérables de la surface au cours de l'année suivant la mission, et l'installation d'un laboratoire base à Horta (LabHorta), permettront de poursuivre les expérimentations sur le vivant à terre après la fin de la mission.
