Objective

ATOS (26 days, ROV Victor/RV L'Atalante) was the sole cruise of the European project VENTOX (EVK3-CT1999-00003) coordinated by D. Dixon (SOC, UK) federating 10 English, Portuguese and French research groups. The objective of this interdisciplinary program was to study the specialized adaptations and processes of hydrothermal organisms and their associated microbial communities in response to the potentially "toxic" deep-sea vent environment. This project involved the comparison of three hydrothermal fields of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, all differing in depth and in their geological, geochemical and biological characteristics. The characterization of the physical and chemical environment (in situ ALCHIMIST chemical analyzer and occasional samples) at the micro-scale corresponding to the distribution of the vent organisms (imaging) was carried out to define the levels of exposure to various "toxic compounds" (sulfides, heavy metals, CO2, etc.). These data provided the basis for experimental approaches at the molecular, cellular and physiological levels of the invertebrates and the fish that dominate vent communities. Laboratory-based experiments under controlled conditions and simulating in situ conditions (IPOCAMP pressure chamber) were to be done to determine the tolerance thresholds of vent organisms to compounds found in their natural environment, rates of DNA damage and repair and the detoxification process. To continue experiments on live animals after the cruise, retrievable autonomous cages were moored during the cruise itself for recovery the year after and a land-based laboratory (LabHorta) was set up.
