Objectif Le programme POMME (Programme Océan Multidisciplinaire Moyenne Échelle) a pour buts de comprendre l'impact de la moyenne échelle (de l'ordre de 20 à 50 km) dans la formation et l'enfouissement (subduction) des eaux hivernales peu stratifiées (eaux modales) et dans la floraison printanière, ainsi que dans le devenir de la matière biogène exportée dans la thermocline supérieure. La région étudiée se trouve dans l'Atlantique Nord Est entre 38 et 45 deg. N, centrée sur 18 deg. W, dans la zone de discontinuité de la profondeur de la couche mélangée hivernale, lieu privilégié de la subduction et de la ventilation de la thermocline. Ce programme intègre s'appuie sur un volet très important de mesures in situ et satellitales, sur une utilisation systématique d'outils d'assimilation de données en temps réel, et sur des développements importants en modélisation numérique couplée dynamique océanique - activité biologique, en liaison étroite avec les données.
