Objectif La mission BIOZAIRE 1 fait l'objet d'un programme nouveau qui intéresse TotalFinaElf. Le projet a débuté avec des opérations de mouillages de longue durée en 2000 (ZAIANGO-OBS-BIOL) et de prélèvements par carottage (ZAIBIOL2); il a pour objectif l'étude de deux types d'écosystèmes benthiques profonds dans une zone de marge passive, l'un fonde sur les apports détritiques, l'autre sur la production autochtone par chimiosynthèse. En effet, la zone étudiée présente les caractéristiques géologiques permettant d'étudier la faune liée aux sources de fluides froids charges en méthane et par ailleurs l'influence sur la faune classique des grands fonds des apports détritiques dans le chenal du Zaïre. BIOZAIRE 1 contribue à l'établissement d'un état de référence des différents types d'environnements profonds sur la marge continentale de l'Angola et du Congo et en zone abyssale.
