Objectif PIRATA est un projet multinational avec participation du Brésil, de la France et des USA. Du cote français, il s'agit d'installer et de maintenir (visite annuelle de chaque site) un réseau de 6 bouées ATLAS (le réseau PIRATA initial dans son ensemble comporte 12 bouées) dans la partie Est du bassin tropical (Golfe de Guinée). Les paramètres observes en temps réel (transmission ARGOS) par chaque système ATLAS permettent de reconstituer l'échange de chaleur à l'interface air-mer, ainsi que la structure thermohaline de la surface jusqu'a 500 de profondeur. Une intégration journalière de l'ensemble des données acquises (et enregistrées localement) selon une fréquence de 10 mn, est transmise par le système ARGOS sur le SMT et le réseau Internet. Les sites des mouillages PIRATA ont été choisis en fonction de différents critères scientifiques (zones clés du système couple ocean-atmosphère) et logistiques (temps bateau). Chaque campagne PIRATA dure environ 15 jours (Abidjan-Abidjan). Durant ces campagnes on procède non seulement au mouillage et/ou au relevage/maintenance (au bout d'un an) des systèmes ATLAS, mais aussi à des radiales CTD (0-1000 m) et à des enregistrements en continu des courants (ADCP) et du Thermosalinographe de coque (T/S). Les données PIRATA dans les modèles numériques de circulation de l'océan et de l'atmosphère devraient permettre de mieux comprendre et simuler les variabilités de type saisonnier à interannuel de la climatologie de l'Atlantique tropical. La partie française du programme PIRATA est inclue dans le projet ECLAT (Études Climatiques sur l'Atlantique Tropical) dans lequel il est aussi procèdé à des mesures courantométriques (Yoyo) de subsurface en zone équatoriale près de 10 deg W, c'est-à-dire près d'un site du réseau PIRATA (bouée Java à 10 deg W-Eq). C'est le relevage de ce système courantométrique (4 mouillages au total, tous à proximité de 10 deg W-Eq) qui sera effectué au cours de la campagne PIRATA-FR8.
