Objective

The objective of the Manaute cruise made by R/V L'Atalante with the submersible Nautile was two-fold: to obtain complete bathymetric coverage of the eastern and western parts of Manus basin to determine its structure, and following observations made by the Japanese submersibles Shinkai 2000 and 6500 during the Manuflux, BioAccess 97, 98 and 99 (Hashimoto et al., 1999) cruises in the Franco-Japanese New STARMER programme (Auzende et al. 1997 ; 1998 ; Gamo et al., 1997), to use Nautile for in situ study of magmatic and hydrothermal processes associated with this type of ocean opening. To that end, 12 Nautile dives, 20 dredges and one EM12 survey were conducted during the cruise.
