Objectif

Déploiement de 18 stations sismologiques sous-marines (OBS), en zones semi-profondes (de 500m à 3500m) :

  • 12 OBS "MicrOBS" (Ifremer-GM) pour une durée de trois semaines ;
  • 6 OBS "Hippo" (Géoazur) pour une durée de trois mois (dont 4 large bande).

Autour des zones de déploiements, de petits levés bathymétriques et des profils chirp sont réalisés, pour s'assurer de la qualité des données et augmenter les chances de récupération des engins.

L'objectif général était l'enregistrement des répliques du séisme du 12 janvier 2010. La magnitude du séisme, malgré ses conséquences dramatiques (235 000 morts, des millions de blessés et sinistrés), n'était pas très élevée : environ Mw=7.1 à 7.2. La loi empirique d'Omori nous indique que le nombre et l'intensité des répliques diminue selon une loi de puissance, d'autant plus rapidement que la magnitude initiale est faible : il était donc particulièrement urgent d'aller enregistrer ces événements avant qu'ils ne deviennent insignifiants en nombre et en magnitude.
