Objective Observing and understanding seasonal, interannual and decadal variations in the ocean carbon cycle are essential in order to estimate carbon budgets on a global scale (in the framework of the Kyoto protocol) and parameterize, then validate predictive climate models (IPCC framework). The S.O. OISO (Indian Ocean observation service) whose cruises are made aboard RV Marion-Dufresne (IPEV) aims to study the variability the oceanic CO2 cycle over time and space and the related air-sea exchanges of CO2 as well as to detect anthropogenic CO2 in the ocean and analyze its ten-year trends in subtropical, sub-Antarctic and southern ocean zones. All the cruises were scheduled in the southern Indian Ocean and its corresponding Antarctic sector. Internationally speaking, especially in terms of knowledge about CO2 air-sea flow on a global scale and anthropogenic CO2 inventories, CARAUS observations complement the measurements taken in other ocean sectors (Pacific, Atlantic, tropical zones) by foreign partners (Australia, Japan, the UK, the US, etc.). Since 2003, the S.O. OISO and the MINERVE programme conducted aboard the Astrolabe (Tasmania-Adelie Land trip) have been joined in the framework of the Environmental research observatory ORE/CARAUS (austral carbon). OISO17 piggybacking on the transit was related to the MD 171/GEISEIR-1 cruise (Project leader C. HÉMOND - IUEM). The cruise falls under the following international programmes: WCRP/CLIVAR, IGBP/SOLAS, IGBP/IMBER and national programmes: PROOF, PNEDC and PATOM.
