Objective The ESSPENCAR cruise followed the ESTIME mission and aimed to validate various equipment and/or marine instruments in the final phase of development through trials at sea. For most of the equipment, these tests are an indispensable and vital step in the development process and enable the transfer phase towards scientific and operational teams to be launched. The following equipment is to be tested: 50 k version of NPENFELD penetrometer, the 8-tonne winch at tip of side beam, all 5 booms to raise and swing the corers, coring in the 36-metre version aboard RV Pourquoi pas?. Trials to calibrate and check the good operability of the ship's multibeam echosounders were also scheduled during available mission time. The related projects are EMSO, Carnot PENFELD, GHASS, PAMELA.
