Objective The ESSPENF50 cruise aimed to validate the operation of the 50 metre version of the PENFELD penetrometer after its upgrade, through trials at sea. For most of the equipment, these tests are an indispensable and vital step in the development process or in recommissioning it for operational service. The following functions were to be tested: the PENFELD penetrometer version of 50 metres and 50 kN, PENFELD penetrometer in the instrumented drill rod version and recovery of PENFELD penetrometer by lifting parachute. This trials cruise follows on from previous cruises: ESTIME, ESS_PENCAR and ESS_PENCARSYSROV. The related projects are EMSO, Carnot PENFELD, GITAN, GHASS and PAMELA.
